In the state of Kansas you have the right to birth anywhere you choose, and you can have any attendant you wish. Drs and CNMs are regulated by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts and the State Board of Nursing respectively. DEMs are not required to carry any license. Although there is no Kansas law regulating birth attendants, the legal precedence in Kansas is that birth is not a medical event therefore, no medical license is required to attend births (STATE BD. OF NURSING v. RUEBKE 1996)
There are two types of midwives available to attend births in this area.
Direct Entry Midwives (DEMs) There are a variety of means of becoming a direct entry midwife; including apprenticeships, degree programs, and self-study. These midwives work independently and in this area attend home births only. Although there is no regulation of independent midwives, most have experience supporting women through all aspects of normal pregnancy and birth. Some insurance companies will reimburse for the care they provide.
Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are nurses who have advanced nursing degrees, usually a Master’s Degree in midwifery. They work under the protocols of a physician, and are available in all environments: hospital, birth center and home. They are trained to support women through all aspects of normal pregnancy and birth. Insurance usually will reimburse for they care they provide.

Family Practice Physicians have a wide scope of practice, which includes the full range of pregnancy, birth and newborn care. They typically care for all ages and genders of patients. In this area they are available for hospital births only. Insurance usually will reimburse for they care they provide.
Obstetricians are surgeons who specialize in pregnancy and childbirth. Their training includes specializing in surgery and high-risk pregnancies. In this area they are available for hospital births only. Insurance usually will reimburse for they care they provide.
